P. Lyman and H. R. Varian publish “How Much Information?” It is the first comprehensive study to quantify, in computer storage terms, the total amount of new and original information (not counting copies) created in the world annually and stored in four physical media: paper, film, optical (CDs and DVDs), and magnetic. The study finds that in 1999, the world produced about 1.5 exabytes (equal =1500 PB) of unique information, A similar study conducted in 2003 by the same researchers found that the world produced about 5 exabytes of new information in 2002.
